Shipbuilding: Hurtigruten Hybrid Construction Forges Ahead
Norwegian company Hurtigruten, the world’s largest expedition cruise operator, is continuing to push the boundaries when it comes to green travel with its order for three hybrid-powered vessels nearing completion, the first ship being due for delivery in May 2019.Two of these revolutionary ships are currently under construction at the Kleven Yard in Ulsteinvik, Norway, the MS Roald Amundsen and its sister ship, the MS Fritjof Nansen, both of which are custom-designed to cope with some of the most extreme conditions seen on our planet, each having a specially-designed, ice-strengthened hull.

Kleven, Lürssen Partner to Build Explorer Vessel
Norwegian shipbuilder Kleven said it has signed a contract with German based luxury yacht designer and builder Lürssen to collaborate for the delivery of a 100-meter-long exploration vessel newbuild for a non-disclosed customer. Kleven said the vessel will be built, partly outfitted and technically finalized at Kleven Verft in Norway, before final outfitting at Lürssen’s Blohm+Voss facility in Hamburg, Germany. The Lürssen Group recently joined a group of investors to collectively inject nearly $40 million into Norwegian shipyard.
Kleven Delivers 116 m Superyacht
Norway’s Kleven has delivered a 116 m superyacht to its owner, Graeme Hart. The vessel left Kleven Verft in Ulsteinvik, Norway this weekend, heading for Germany, where the final completion of the vessel is to be carried out by mid 2017. “It has been a great pleasure working with Mr Hart and his team on this magnificent project. We highly appreciate the trust they have shown us by placing not just one but two orders with Kleven, in what was a new segment for us,” said Ståle Rasmussen, CEO of Kleven. Superyacht Ulysses Equipped with 8 Heavy-duty Cranes
One of the world’s largest dedicated luxury explorer yachts, the 107 meter Ulysses, is equipped with eight PALFINGER MARINE cranes in total. Two heavy duty foldable knuckle boom cranes, four extension booms (type PK 90002 M) and two smaller compact cranes. In March 2016 the yacht was delivered to her owner. Ulysses is the first private superyacht undertaken by Norwegian shipbuilder Kleven and reaches a top speed of 16 knots. Ulysses can accommodate 60 guests over seven decks and offers amenities including a helicopter landing pad, helicopter garage and a swimming pool.
Kleven Wins New Yacht Contract
Norwegian ship builder Kleven has secured a new contract for a high specification, 116-metre long Expedition Support Vessel. The order is placed by Mr Graeme Hart, who currently has another vessel of the same type under construction at Kleven Verft. This new vessel is almost ten metres longer than the vessel currently under construction at the yard, and is of type MT 5006 MKII ESV, designed by Norwegian ship design company Marin Teknikk in cooperation with Naval Architect Kyle Dick of New Zealand based Oscar Mike Naval Architects.
