Norwegian company Hurtigruten, the world’s largest expedition cruise operator, is continuing to push the boundaries when it comes to green travel with its order for three hybrid-powered vessels nearing completion, the first ship being due for delivery in May 2019.Two of these revolutionary ships are currently under construction at the Kleven Yard in Ulsteinvik, Norway, the MS Roald Amundsen and its sister ship, the MS Fritjof Nansen, both of which are custom-designed to cope with some of the most extreme conditions seen on our planet, each having a specially-designed, ice-strengthened hull.

Edie Rodriguez, the Americas Brand Chairman for PONANT Yacht Cruises and Expeditions, has spent a life and built a career centered on travel, cruise and branding in a most luxurious manner. She was a natural to discuss the booming luxury expedition sector, the next big frontier in the global cruise industry. It is natural, in the U.S., to pronounce PONANT as “po nant,” but the French have a different style and the company name is pronounced “po non,” dropping the ‘t.’ But Edie Rodriquez, charged with spreading the PONANT name in North America, does not get hung up on diction in this case.

In 2014, the global yacht charter market was valued at USD 35 billion and is projected to reach USD 51 billion by 2020, growing at a CAGR of 6.5% during the forecast period, according to Market Report. Region wise, Eastern Europe is expected to see the largest growth of 7.2% annually with other regions growing at an average rate of 6.5%. Maritime security company MAST announced it has formed a new partnership with marine sonar systems provider WESMAR with the goal of protecting super yachts and the maritime industry from security risks. Hempel Launches New Epoxy Marine Coating

Coatings supplier Hempel has launched a new two-component pure epoxy coating for the marine newbuilding sector, Hempadur Quattro XO 17820, in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico. The PSPC (Performance Standard for Protective Coatings) compliant Hempadur Quattro XO 17820 was developed for water ballast tanks in new vessels, but can also be used as a uni-primer for most vessel areas – above and below the waterline. Hempadur Quattro XO 17820 has been created specifically to suit the working methods of shipbuilders and so accommodates shorter re-coat intervals and reduces maintenance costs, Hempel said.

Boating industry bikers from across the country are throttling up this weekend for the official launch of "Pacific Coast Rush," a week-long escorted motorcycle tour from Seattle, WA to San Francisco, CA, including a two-day swing down to Big Sur and Monterey.
